Da circa un anno, in Italia, vi è un gruppo di persone impegnate in una impresa colossale; la ricostruzione del carro armato FIAT 2000. Un carro costruito in soli due esemplari durante il primo conflitto mondiale. Ma di questo vi racconterò in un prossimo articolo. Alcuni giorni fa (dopo aver letto svariati interventi in rete dove sembrava che, fuori dall’Italia, fosse tutto più semplice), spinta da curiosità e dal voler comprendere meglio, cosa accade in Europa in materia di restauro e ricostruzione mezzi WW1 e WW2, ho intervistato un rappresentante del team che ha ricostruito il carro Renault FT.

Mr. Riid, abbiamo potuto ammirare dalle pagine di facebook, il vostro lavoro di ricostruzione dei carri francesi Renault FT e quindi, per noi, siete una nuova scoperta. Ma da quanto tempo esiste Weald Foundation? E di cosa si occupa nello specifico? <<La Weald Foundation è comunemente nota come la sdkfz Military Vehicle Foundation.  Ci siamo costituiti come associazione di volontariato nel 2002.  Restauriamo mezzi militari storici fin dalla seconda metà degli anni ‘90.  Per vedere quali sono, guardate pure sul nostro sito.  Digitate Weald Foundation su Google>>

In questi anni di lavoro, quanti mezzi storici siete riusciti a restaurare o a ricostruire? <<Da quando abbiamo cominciato nel 1998 abbiamo restaurato 19 mezzi militari storici. Potete vederne alcuni sul nostro sito>>

Anche in Italia, vi sono alcuni gruppi che si occupano di recupero mezzi militari. Ogni volta ci dicono di avere problemi di spazio per conservarli, di difficoltà nel trovare giovani appassionati al recupero di questi mezzi meccanici e, ancora più difficile, trovare i fondi. Anche voi avete queste problematiche? E come le risolvete? <<Il problema sono i giovani.  Noi ora stiamo lavorando con un paio di bloggers di “World Of Tanks” che sono appassionati anche di carri armati veri.  Loro ci stanno aiutando ad attirare il pubblico giovane.  Non siamo sicuri che funzionerà, ma è un inizio.  Sembra che le giovani generazioni siano molto lente a interessarsi di questo.  Cominciano con videogiochi come World of Tanks o Armoured Warfare e poi scoprono i carri armati veri.  Un altro problema sono i fondi.  Siamo già fortunati se, in quanto associazione no profit, abbiamo i fondi per coprire le spese correnti.  Comunque noi abbiamo bisogno sempre di altri soldi per aiutarci a coprire i costi dei restauri.  Abbiamo cominciato una campagna di tesseramento per provare e mettere su altri incassi.  I membri ricevono online ogni settimana degli articoli su cosa abbiamo scoperto e partecipano ogni anno ad un “open day”.  Speriamo che questo potrà eventualmente contribuire significativamente alle nostre necessità.  Dunque non abbiamo risolto il problema, ma ci stiamo lavorando.>>

Tornando ai carri Renault FT; in quanto tempo siete riusciti a realizzarli? Avete avuto aiuti (sponsor o sostegni dallo Stato), per poter eseguire questo fantastico lavoro? <<L’FT il TSF hanno richiesto dieci anni di lavoro. Non abbiamo avuto sponsor o aiuti dallo Stato.  Ecco perché ci abbiamo messo così tanto. Dobbiamo lavorare con il nostro budget annuale.  Inoltre è stato difficile trovare alcune parti e in alcuni casi ciò ha richiesto diversi anni.  In più abbiamo dovuto realizzare ex novo alcune parti, il che ha richiesto ancora più tempo.>>

Come lei saprà, in Italia non vi sono eventi particolari dedicati ai carri o ai mezzi militari. Da voi esistono? Ce ne può indicare alcuni a cui voi partecipate? <<Nel Regno Unito noi andiamo al Tank Museum per mostrare i veicoli.  Quest’anno siamo anche andati a Militracks nei Paesi Bassi.  Speriamo di tornarci.  Il prossimo agosto saremo di nuovo al Tank Museum.  Due eventi all’anno è già un grosso sforzo richiedendo una lunga preparazione.  In ogni modo, quest’anno noi potremmo arricchire il nostro curriculum con altri musei in giro per l’Europa.  Ad esempio, abbiamo collaborato con il Saumur in Francia per il progetto FT.>>

E per quanto riguarda i musei, lavorate in sinergia con loro e con quali? <<Sì, abbiamo lavorato con il Tank Museum nel Regno Unito.  Saumur in Francia.  Overloon nei Paesi Bassi.  Arsenalen in Svezia. Police Museum in Belgio.  E con altri musei in Spagna, Germania, Stati Uniti e Norvegia.>>

Ora, se mi permette, le vorrei porre un’ultima domanda; ha forse saputo che un gruppo di appassionati italiani, vogliono ricostruire il famoso Fiat 2000. Cosa consiglia loro, per affrontare tale impresa? <<Buona fortuna e la cosa più importante è avere senso dell’umorismo.  Più seriamente prendete i progetti (Mr. Riid parla dei progetti di cui – purtroppo – non si ha traccia), ci saranno da qualche parte.  Non mollate mai.  Anche io ne credevo uno scomparso.  Continuate a cercare.>>

For about a year, in Italy, there’s a group of people involved in a colossal enterprise: the reconstruction of a FIAT 2000 tank. It was a WW1 tank built in only two examples. But I’ll tell you it in a next article. Some days ago, (after I’ve red several online interventions in which seemed that everything should be asy outside Italy), curious to know better what happens in Europe about restoration and reconstruction of WW1 and WW2 military transports, I’ve interviewed a rep of the team who had reconstructed the Renault FT tank.

Mr. Riid, we could admire, from your facebook page, your work of reconstruction of French tanks Renault FT and so, for us, you’re a new discovery. From how much time does Weald Foundation exists? And what’s it involved in precisely? <<The Weald Foundation used to be known as the sdkfz Military Vehicle Foundation.  We were set up as a a charity in 2002.  We had been retoring armoured vehicles since the late 90s.  For what’s involved look at our website.  Type in Weald Foundation into Google.>>

In these years of work, how many historical transports could you reconstruct or restore? <<Since we began in 1998 we have restored 19 historice armoured vehicles.  You can see some of them on the website.>>

Also in Italy we have some groups involved in military transport’s recovering. They often say that they have no places to serve them, no young people keen on recovering of these means, and, most important things, no funds. You too have these problems? How do you solve them? <<Young people is a problem.  We are now working with a couple of bloggers from World Of Tanks who are also keen on real tanks.  They are helping us to attract a new young audience.  We are not sure if it will work but its a start.  There appears to be a very slow growth in interest from the younger generation.  They start with games such as World of Tanks or Armoured Warfare and then discover that they can see real tanks as well.  Funding is also an issue.  We are lucky inthat as a charity we have a fund to cover our running costs.  However we always need extra money to help cover the costs of the restorations.  We have started a membership scheme to try and bring in more money.  Members get  weekly online articles about what we discover and come toan open day every year.  We hope that eventually this will make a significant contribution to our costs.  So we haven’t solved the problem  but are working on it.>>

Coming back to Renault FT tanks, in how much time could you make them? Somebody (sponsor or State helps) has helped you in doing this fantastic work? <<The FT and TSF took 10 years from when we first decided to do them to now.  We had no state or sponsorship help.  This is why it took so long.  We had to work within our annual budget.  However it was also difficult to find some parts and in somke cases this took several years.  Also we had to make and cast new pparts which took time.>>

As you probably know, in Italy we haven’t specific events about tanks or military transport. Do any of them extist in your country? Can you specify any of them you take part in? <<In the UK we go to the Tank Museum to show the vehicles.  We also went tio Militracks in the Netherlands this year.  We are hoping to go back to the Netherlands next year.  We will be back at the Tank Museum in August this year.  Two shows a year is about our limit as it takes a lot of time to get ready.  We may, hoever, increase this with more trips to museums across Europe next year.  For example we worked very closely with Saumur in France on the FT project.>>

And what about museums? Do you work with them, and which of them do you work with? <<Yes, we work with the Tank Museum in the UK.  Saumur in France.  Overloon in the Netherlands.  Arsenalen in Sweden. Police Museum in Belgium.  Also museums in Spain, Germany, the United States and Norway.>>

Now, if I can, I’d like ask you a last question; did you know that a group of Italian enthusiasts want reconstruct famous tank Fiat 2000. What do you advice them to face this enterprise? <<Good luck and the most important thing is to have a sense of humour.  More seriously find the blueprints, they will be somewhere.  Never give up.  Also I belive one disappeared.  Keep looking for it.>>
